AMADEE-20: The Mars Mission Documentary

Being on Mars - It's a Real Thing

Imagine a world beyond all imagination. A future. Science so complex and breathtaking. Unachievable. Far far away.

And now imagine it comes closer. Closer with each research. Each mystery analysed and solved. Step by step.

But what goes into realizing a giant dream? What does it take to achieve this dream?

The Austrian Space Forum has been at the forefront of it all, taking complex and thorough research to a whole new level. Since 2015, the AMADEE Mars Missions have been the main focus of The Austrian Space Forum.

In October 2021, The Austrian Space Forum – in cooperation with the Israel Space Agency as the host agency and D-MARS – conducted an integrated Mars analog field mission in the Negev Desert in Israel – the AMADEE-20 Mars simulation. The expedition was carried out in a Martian terrestrial analog and directed by a dedicated Mission Support Center in Austria. A small field crew of highly trained analog astronauts with spacesuit simulators conducted experiments preparing for future human and robotic Mars exploration missions.

Watch here what it meant for the crew to be isolated, exposed to extreme conditions and to carry out tests and trial runs while under duress.

For this documentary, the film crew has accompanied the chosen analog astronauts of the AMADEE-20 mission into the Negev Desert in Israel. The test site was selected for its geological and topographic similarity to Mars. The replicated Mars landscape with the harsh conditions of what we assume is expecting the first Mars Mission Crew was home to the members of the latest analog Mars Mission.

The living quarters, laboratory and all other facilities were built from containers supplied and installed by Gebrüder Weiss. The logistics pros ensured that all the equipment was reliably and professionally stored before the mission and delivered on time to the Negev Desert in Israel. They not only provided logistical support for the mission, but also contributed significantly to its success with their know-how.

A huge thank you goes to all who have been a crucial part to create this documentary. Stay tuned and continue to follow our journey!
